Fort Wilkins is a restored 1844 Army Military Outpost. The park features 19 restored buildings and in the summer a living-history program. The Fort is open to the public and is free but the park requires a Michigan Recreation Pass for entry. Visitors can look back at life on the northern frontier in the mid 1800's along the rocky shoreline of Lake Superior.
Speaking of looking back, to find what you seek, you will have to start at the beginning where you park across from the entrance to the Fort. Find the trail to Lake Superior and check out the view! As you are gazing at the wonder of Lake Superior and imagining the soldiers' life long ago, find a trail to your right. Go approximately 30 steps. (I am 6'2") to a T intersection. Go Right 3 steps to a cross on the ground where 2 logs and a pile of rocks lay. Underneath is the Ft. Wilkins Letterbox. Please bring your own RED INK PAD to stamp in. This is a popular spot so please be careful when retrieving and rehide well. Thanks!
