This box is in the Swamp Burying Ground. Not a very auspicious name but an interesting spot nonetheless. The cemetery is on Swamp Rd. which is a dirt road that’s rather hard to spot and, if you do spot it, it’s very narrow and muddy. There is a better way. From I84 exit 72, head south on Rt. 89. Just after Chaffee Lake on the right, turn right on Old Town Rd. It’s right by Smitty’s General Store. Go down a bit and park behind the Volunteer Fire Department. From here you’ll see one end of the dirt road. Walk down a short way and the entrance to the cemetery will be on your right. You might want to use your bug spray.
Many of the stones here are broken but there are some nice carvings and a surprising number that are readable, even from the 1700s. Wander around and check them out.
To find the box, go to the south end of the west wall. There will be a tree blocking your way to the corner (or at least there was today). Stop at the tree and look down and back at the big rocks in the ground. Walk back to the 3rd one. Just a tad beyond this and behind the flat rock in the wall is the daisy.
Be careful of the stone wall while you’re looking and make sure you cover well when you’re done.
